Dahlonega Area Attractions

Experience authentic Appalachian Mountain destinations.

Amicalola Falls State Park

It’s easy to see why Amicalola Falls State Park is one of the most popular Georgia State Parks with 829 acres of beautiful North Georgia mountain wilderness in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Amicalola, a Cherokee Indian word meaning “tumbling waters,” is an appropriate name for the 729-foot falls, the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. An eight-mile approach trail leads from the park to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the 2,150-mile Appalachian Trail. Many other beautiful and diverse trails wind through the park and activities are abundant at the Amicalola Falls Visitors Center. Frequent park visitors can save money with a $50 Annual ParkPass available at the Lodge or Visitor’s Center. Passes are good for one year from purchase date.

Park hours are 7:00 am to 10:00 pm and all cars require a $5 GA State Park Pass.

Visitor Center hours are:
Sunday – Wednesday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Thursday – Saturday: 9:00 am – 7:00 pm.

Public planetarium shows on Friday nights are free. They begin at 8:00 pm with doors opening at 7:30 pm. No reservations or tickets are required. The planetarium also offers private shows to groups, such as school field trip shows on weekdays. Email planetarium@ung.edu for more information.

The general public and students are invited to come out to the observatory on Friday nights after the planetarium show for celestial viewing.
