Planetarium & Observatory

The star theater seats 46 and houses a Digistar 5 digital planetarium system, which can project starry skies, video, and more on a thirty-foot diameter dome. The effect is a realistic simulation of the night sky as seen from anywhere on the surface of the Earth at any time of night and at any epoch from the ancient past to the far future. The digital system also allows visitors to fly through space to explore other planets, moons, and stars, or sail across the galaxy!

Public planetarium shows on Friday nights are free. They begin at 8:00 pm with doors opening at 7:30 pm. No reservations or tickets are required. The planetarium also offers private shows to groups, such as school field trip shows on weekdays. Email planetarium@ung.edu for more information.

The general public and students are invited to come out to the observatory on Friday nights after the planetarium show for celestial viewing. The Friday telescopic viewing begins after sunset, weather permitting. See the North Georgia Astronomical Observatory Facebook page for updates on the observatory operating status.
